The Last Polka at Blob’s Park: Our Final Evening at a Legendary Bavarian Wonderland

I remember being 16 years old and it was Father’s Day weekend. My mom told me our whole family was going to this German place that played polka music and had plenty of German fare. Well not too many teenagers are going to be thrilled about the prospect of polka dancing, and I have never…

Another Glenn Dale perspective from 2006. Deterioration and decline - can’t imagine what the interior looks like 15 years later. The law that this could only be rehabbed as a retirement community was lifted but there still hasn’t been a qualified buyer. I worry about demolition by neglect but there’s also tons of asbestos and lead paint everywhere. #glenndalehospital #deserve2preserve #abandoned #sanitarium #1930s #classicalrevivalarchitecture

Dreary winter days.
The untold stories in a historic kitchen, the hours worked by the enslaved to provide three meals a day to the family who lived here, now is silent but echoes of the past remain. Currently researching for names of those who were enslaved on this property, will post updates. #ifthesewallscouldtalk #historicpreservation #blackhistoryisamericanhistory #federalarchitecture #servicewing
Realizing that for 30+ years there have been books in a historic house that are in terrible condition but actually were in the home of the main family who lived here, so they made their way back. George and Prudence Howard (one-time Governor and First Lady of Maryland) named their Federal style house Waverly after a Sir Walter Scott novel called “Waverley” and lived there from 1811 through their deaths in 1846 & 1847 respectively. The property was divided among their four living sons and stayed in the family until right around the start of the Civil War. The family’s reliance on slave labor and some poor investments led to the sons selling off the property to cover their debts. #history #historicbooks #maryland #historic research
Abandoned Victorian era cemetery in the midst of suburbia. Some symbolism on the graves include columns which can mean a long life lived well; lambs represent innocence and almost always are on graves of babies and children; and a finger pointing upward is symbolic of heaven and eternal life. #cemeteries #cemeteryphotography #cemeteriesofinstagram #gravesymbolism #abandoned #historiccemeteries #deserve2preserve
